Stadhuys

Stadhuys means Townhouse in Dutch. Constructed in 1650 as the residence and administrative center for the Dutch Governor and his deputy. The structure reflects Dutch architectural. It is today the "Museum of History and Ethnography". The museum exhibits traditional wedding clothes and artifacts of Melaka, dating back to its days of glory.

This area is also know as the "Red Square" or "Jam Besar" by the locals. The fountain was build by the British during its occupation, there is an engraving refering it to Victoria era. A clock tower stands tall in the center of the square. Originally, it "bells" on the hourly.

Take a town bus, No. 17 to this area. It has a carnival like atmosphere during weekends. At night, it is brightly lit.
