Porta De Santiago - A Famosa
Around 1511, the Portugis attacked Malacca. The battle rage on for weeks until under the superiority of the weapons of mass destruction, makes the Sultan Mahmud retreats to Johor. To safeguard the city from would be "guerilla" attacks, The Portugese built a fort around the city to secure the perimeters.
The fort named Porta De Santiago gateway has stand the test of time while the rest of the walls were badly damaged during the conquest by the Dutch.
The Dutch rebuild some parts of the fort and redesigned the gateway with its Coat of Arms, which can be seen till present day, and renamed it VOC.
It was said that there were tunnels running down the gateway. However this tunnel entrance has been sealed.
Visit the Fort during night time where lights will illuminate the once invicible fort. Maybe you can feel the battle raging still. :)
